Held in March, labour market experts from across the UK gave workshops and presentations on a range of subjects including up-skilling Scottish jobs, low wages and labour market flows.

Trade unions and workplace training

Futureskills Trade Union Rrepresentation ReportThere are few differences between unionised and non-unionised workplaces when it comes to levels of training activity, once organisation size and sectoral differences are considered.
That was one of the key findings from a report — based on the 2004 and 2006 Employer Skills Surveys — investigating whether trade unions influence skills investment in firms.

Workers’ views on skills

Futureskills Work Skills in Scotland Report A Futureskills report has highlighted the polarisation of jobs in Scotland, with many requiring either highly qualified workers or no qualifications on entry.
Work Skills in Scotland: the Workers’ View also reveals that around a third of people receive no training at work, largely because their jobs don’t require it. Click below to find out more about the report taken from the Work Skills in Britain Survey.

Held jointly between Futureskills Scotland and the Economic Development Association Scotland (EDAS), the sessions will disseminate research from Futureskills Scotland, senior academics and policy makers.

Futureskills Scotland has also recently improved its other free resource, Research Online. It offers instant access to nearly 5,000 labour market reports and analysis from across the world. Highlights include:

• Community benefits in public procurement: a report demonstrating the approach for including targeted recruitment and training clauses in public sector contracts.

• Patterns of pay: results of the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, 1997 to 2007.
